Special Notes
It is super easy and economical to grow yeast in Mason jars with our Yeast Farmer (YF) lids. Our unique non-metallic YF lids have a patented Mother of All Valves to release pressure over 3 psi and a 0.22 micron syringe filter that only let sterile air through. So now you can conveniently sterilize any wide mouth Mason jar with a YF lid in a microwave oven, let cool down to inoculate your favorite yeast and let it grow to pitch your fermenter. We recommend filling a quart size Mason jar with 500 ml (one pint) of 1.040 wort (50g of DME), install the YF lid, and nuke it at maximum power to boiling and then simmer it at suitable power level for 3 minutes.
Sterilization by microwave:
Simple and effective way to sterilize the Yeast Farmer jar.
Sterile venting for oxygen and burp-free:
Vented with 0.22 micron syringe filter for sterile air and pressure control.
The lid of Yeast Farmer is made with food grade nylon, silicone rubber.
The syringe filter is 0.22µm PTFE hydrophobic type.
The lid and the Mason jar are autoclave-able in microwave oven
It is safe to microwave the magnetic stirring bar.
Please be careful moving the hot Mason jar from the microwave and holding the jar with insulated gloves - not the lid!!!
HOW TO USE:
Use a quart size wide mouth Mason jar:
1. Fill the jar 1/2 full (16oz/500ml) of warm water to dissolve DME and yeast food to have 1.040 gravity.
2. Install the YEAST FARMER lid on the jar.
3. Use a microwave to boil and then simmer for 4 minutes. You may want to practice with water to dial in with your particular microwave unit. I have a 1200W Panasonic which has inverter power control so I run 100% for 2 minutes and 30% for 2 minutes and 10% for 1 minutes. The point here is to bring it to a boil and then modulate the heat so it simmers but not over boil to create a mess and clog up the syringe filter. Once you learn to boil with your microwave, you can do it again easily. There is no risk of blowing up the jar because the YEAST FARMER has the green Mother of All Valves that releases pressure above 2-3 psi and sucks in air as the jar cools down so no vacuum is developed in the jar. Furthermore the 0.22
µ
m syringe filter of the YEAST FARMER will only let sterile air through.
4. Remove the hot jar from the microwave using oven mitts and holding the glass jar - not the hot lid as it may slip of the jar mouth.
5. Let the jar cool down either by time/air or gradually with tap water (so not to crack the jar with erupt temperature change).
6. Open the lid, add the yeast, close the lid and swirl frequently or spin with a magnetic stirrer at room temperature. Yeast typically double in cell count every 60 -90 minutes at 30C/86F in optimal growth medium. 7. The YEAST FARMER with yeast can be stored in a fridge for long time without the need to burp periodically.
Simply, there is no better or easier or cheaper way to cultivate yeast.
One can take some boiled wort and put in a YEAST FARMER jar (that had been sterilized by nuking it for 1 minute with a few oz of water), cool it and add the yeast to make quick starter to pitch later.
